Sampling instructions

Please provide a complete description of the virologic status of the patient using a PHENOSCRIPTTM request form:

Potential hazards that could cause direct or indirect harm to the personnel of VIRalliance must be indicated.

The following types of sample can be processed:

Whole blood (about 5 ml) should be collected in EDTA tubes and processed according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. Heparinized tubes must not be used as heparin is a PCR inhibitor. Whole blood should shipped at ambient temperature within 24 hours.

Plasma samples (ideally 2 tubes of 2 ml) may be stored in a freezer for up to one week at -20ºC before shipping or at –70ºC/ -80º C for longer storage.

RNA/ DNA samples (about 150 µl) should be stored in a freezer at – 70ºC (RNA) or – 20ºC (DNA) prior to shipping.

Shipping instructions

A reputable company with experience of transporting infectious material on dry ice should be chosen unless the collection is arranged by VIRalliance.

Blood samples must be chilled (i.e. 4 ºC) and plasma or RNA or DNA samples should be shipped frozen on dry ice.

Shipment should be made in time to ensure delivery to our laboratory before Friday at 13:00 pm. Delivery cannot be accepted at the weekend.
